Dust & Magnet: multivariate information visualization using a magnet metaphor

Received: 2 November 2004 Revised: 5 April 2005 Accepted: 11 April 2005 Abstract The use of multivariate information visualization techniques is intrinsically difficult because the multidimensional nature of data cannot be effectively presented and understood on real-world displays, which have limited dimensionalities. However, the necessity to use these techniques in daily life is increasing as the amount and complexity of data grows explosively in the information age. Thus, multivariate information visualization techniques that are easier to understand and more accessible are needed for the general population. In order to meet this need, the present paper proposes Dust & Magnet, a multivariate information visualization technique using a magnet metaphor and various interactive techniques. The intuitive magnet metaphor and subsequent interactions facilitate the ease of learning this multivariate information visualization technique. A visualization tool such as Dust & Magnet has the potential to increase the acceptance of and utility for multivariate information by a broader population of users who are not necessarily knowledgeable about multivariate information visualization techniques. Magnet Mail: A Visualization System for Email Information Retrieval
We present Magnet Mail (MM), a visualization system to retrieve information from email archives via a zoomable interface. MM allows users to infer relationships among their email documents based on searching keywords. The prototype interacts with a mass-market email system and uses a magnet metaphor to simulate user interaction with emails. The graphical implementation relies mostly on the Picc...
متن کاملHands-On, Large Display Visual Data Exploration
We have developed an updated version of the Dust and Magnet visualization technique for large, multitouch displays. Multiple users can interactively manipulate magnets (data attributes) to observe how iron dust (the data items) changes its positions, and thus gain insight about the data. This type of visualization provides a very direct engagement with the data and thus a very ”hands on” analyt...
متن کاملA Visualization System for Emails
Magnet Mail (MM) is a visualization system for emails based on a zoomable interface and on manipulation of objects. Users are able to search, analyze and understand relations among email messages as long as they provide searching keywords to do so, as well as interact with graphical objects in the display in a pro-active manner. The underlying concept is a magnet metaphor that relates user inte...
متن کاملSpecifying Viewpoint and Information Need with Affective Metaphors: A System Demonstration of the Metaphor-Magnet Web App/Service
Metaphors pervade our language because they are elastic enough to allow a speaker to express an affective viewpoint on a topic without committing to a specific meaning. This balance of expressiveness and indeterminism means that metaphors are just as useful for eliciting information as they are for conveying information. We explore here, via a demonstration of a system for metaphor interpretati...

This paper proposes a component-based 3D object manipulation framework using a magnet metaphor for 2D and 3D integrated toolkit system. The authors have been studying component based 3D software development systems. For the development of 3D graphics applications, the layout of 3D objects is important factor. However, it is very laborious work and it takes a long time because 3D objects have si...
